Harmer SML – Serving UK Hospitals

Posted by judy

Advances in technology over recent decades have brought some major changes in building practice and construction techniques. None of which have escaped the production of Harmer SML cast iron soil and waste drainage, a traditional material with an advanced future.

For nearly 40 years, the Harmer brand from Alumasc has instilled specifiers and contractors with confidence, using methods and materials that have stood the test of time and will continue to do so for decades to come. The launch of BIM content for its entire Harmer SML range in summer 2014 is another example of Harmer been at the leading edge of the industry.

smlThe range has recently undergone review in order to bring it up to new UK CE Mark requirements and its unrivalled German build quality also carries British Board Agrément Certification 05/4191. The pipes and fittings meet the European Standard BS EN 877, showing full compliance with EU manufacturing, testing and technical performance requirements.

The entire range has a proven track record in high-demand applications such as public buildings, schools, colleges, high-rise office blocks, retail and healthcare facilities.

Most recently Harmer SML is being installed at the new Alder Hey Children’s Health Park in Liverpool. Alumasc worked closely with BSS Drainage to fulfil both the technical and commercial requirements of the contract, which is due for completion in 2016.

This massive installation represents just one of many successful Healthcare applications for SML, with other landmark projects including Royal London & St Barts Hospital’s in London, Derby Hospital, Coventry’s Walsgrave Hospital, Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital in Norwich, Bristol Royal Infirmary and the prestigious London Cancer Clinic in Harley Street.

steelSML can be integrated with Harmer roof outlets and floor drains, which were also specified at Alder Hey & Royal London & St Barts. Harmer Roof outlets are designed for ease of installation and provide highly efficient rainwater handling solutions for all flat roof projects. The Floor Drain range covers all internal waste water situations, designed to ensure maximum efficiency.

ironHaving launched a new Stainless Steel Floor and Channel Drain Range at the beginning of 2014, July will bring further development with the introduction of new Cast Iron Floor Drains. The new cast iron range will offer a robust, high performance alternative which complements Harmer’s existing drainage solutions, making the Harmer Drainage offer the most comprehensive on the market.

Technological advances have played a very large part in Alumasc’s progression of its overall service provision during recent years. Having been
the first manufacturer to develop a PC and iPad app for the calculation of Rainwater and Drainage systems – a feature which has quickly become part of everyday life for large numbers of architects and specifiers nationwide – and now the launch of its first phase of BIM content for its entire Harmer SML range.

Available from summer 2014, the BIM portfolio will be produced in Autodesk Revit MEP (2012) format and will be fully compliant with COBie UK 2012, BS1192 and AEC (UK).

Ben Green, Marketing Manager for Harmer Drainage at Alumasc, comments:

“The introduction of BIM compatible content is one of the most significant changes we’ve seen in the construction industry in recent years. The potential benefits of BIM are countless but we realise that for some, the implementation may present challenges. We hope that by providing our BIM content for Harmer SML at such an early stage of the process, it will give architects and specifiers the time they need to make the transition as painless as possible and meet the requirements of the Government Construction Strategy (GCS) to have collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) on its projects by 2016.”
