Harmer Drainage continues to develop and demonstrate its commitment to the construction industry in further moves to improve its products and services.

During a period of rapid growth, Harmer has recently seen the launch of new Cast Iron and Stainless Steel product ranges, the creation of a dedicated Technical Team and the expansion of its Sales Team with the appointment of some of the industry’s most experienced personnel.

In its latest move, Harmer is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Mascall as National Sales Manager for the new Harmer Civil Drainage Division. Steve brings with him 25 years of industry experience, having started his career in the merchant sector, going on to work for some of the UK’s most recognised building product manufacturers.

Steve will oversee a number of new product launches which represent major developments in the Harmer product offer to the Civils Drainage market. New products will include Filcoten Channel Drainage and SML Below Ground Drainage.

This is a further indication of Harmer’s ability to provide the industry with the most robust Drainage solutions and trusted technical support – something that Managing Director Steve Durdant-Hollamby is determined will continue well into the future. He comments:

“To assure longevity within this industry you must always be aware of how technology is constantly changing our work processes and react quickly to what your Customers are telling you. At Harmer we have developed our product and services offer accordingly over recent years and this has resulted in a fully comprehensive portfolio which is completely relevant to an ever-changing market.

“ The appointment of Steve Mascall is a valuable part of our development – his background and experience within the Civil Drainage market will aid our expansion and enable us to move forward with future plans.”

Picture 157Harmer Drainage has reinforced its commitment to providing the best products and services to the market with the introduction of Level 2 Building Information Modelling (BIM) content for its industry-leading SML range.

Alumasc’s Harmer SML cast iron soil and waste pipework system range is now BIM Level 2 compliant, with 3D BIM data objects now available via the Harmer Drainage website or the BIM store. In addition to the SML range, Harmer’s floor and roof drainage products currently offer BIM Level 1 compliance, offering full BIM compatibility when the 2D and 3D images and support documentation are combined. These ranges will be upgraded to Level 2 compliance by 2016.

Talking about the introduction of BIM content, Chris Lister, Business Development Manager at Alumasc, said:

“Our BIM content offering responds directly to the Government requirement that all companies tendering for Government work shall be BIM Level 2 compliant by 2016. We’ve also listened carefully to our architectural and engineering customers who’ve told us of their need for solutions which make their computer-led designs more robust.

“By introducing BIM objects, Harmer Drainage has secured its consideration for future Government project work and set the ball rolling towards building our own digital product library online.”

BIM offers the construction industry the opportunity to bring together all components of a building’s design in one place through digital modelling. BIM data can be used to illustrate the entire building life cycle and, by integrating different aspects of the design more effectively, reduces the risks of mistakes and discrepancies during specification.

The Harmer SML range is a lightweight cast iron pipework system at the cutting edge of cast iron technology. Manufactured in Germany to meet the highest quality and performance standards, Harmer SML also carries British Board Agrément Certification, 05/4191.

The pipes and fittings meet the European Standard BS EN 877, further assured by CE Marking, showing full compliance with EU manufacturing, testing and technical performance requirements. SML has also secured British Standard Kitemark certification, this further confirms the products are manufactured in accordance with EN877:1999 +A1:2006 and quality controlled under ISO9001:2008.

The British Standards Institute who issue the certificate, carry out rigorous checks to ensure that products are worthy of the BS Kitemark Stamp.

ChapelSt_PRpic_smallHarmer Stainless Steel Spa Channels, have been chosen to provide a robust drainage solution for stylish new student accomodation in Salford.

Development of the £3million student block, X1 Chapel Street, was undertaken by Bardsley Construction on behalf of X1 Developments and was completed in September 2014.

Contracted merchant suppliers, BSS Industrial in Manchester, supplied over 50 linear metres of Alumasc’s bespoke stainless steel spa channels for bathrooms across the entire project, following the failure of a previous supplier to deliver a successful solution. The channels were installed by specialist contractor Lorne Stewart.

The project is one of the UK’s first installations of the new Harmer Stainless Steel Floor Drainage range, which was recently added to Alumasc’s already extensive portfolio of drainage solutions for the construction industry.

Pete Wainer, Area Sales Manager at Alumasc Rainwater & Drainage, comments:

“The project was in need of a completely bespoke solution and had already suffered problems with previous suppliers. Harmer was invited to manufacture the spa channels within a very tight timescale, for the entire building, comprising over 100 bathrooms.

“The technical challenge was to clamp the base of the channels into place through the wet room vinyl flooring, dressing it into the floor to provide a seamless and watertight finish.

“By manufacturing a highly effective bespoke working sample, Alumasc was able to first demonstrate an effective solution to the problem before we were commissioned to provide the channels for the entire project. The result was a smooth installation, highlighting the effectiveness of this new Harmer product range.”

Alumasc’s new Harmer range comprises high-performance, highly versatile stainless steel floor drains, channel drains, shower and wet room drainage, capable of withstanding some of the most demanding applications.

Steve_PRpic_SmallAlumasc Rainwater and Harmer Drainage, are happy to announce the appointment of their new Managing Director Steve Durdant-Hollamby.

Steve joined the Alumasc team on 1st August following a 25 year career in the Construction Industry, joining from ACO Technologies where he held the position of Commercial Director. Steve brings a wealth of experience in distribution markets, the merchant sector and product knowledge within the Rainwater and Drainage industry.

When it comes to future strategy for the Alumasc Rainwater and Harmer Drainage brands, Steve knows exactly what his plans are. He comments:

“I am very much looking forward to joining what is already a very well-established and well-respected team. Together we will continue to drive the brands forward, encompassing greater market penetration and product development for the UK and export markets.

“We will proceed with relentless development of our manufacturing processes and internal procedures, to ensure we excel at what we do and that our customers find us even easier to work with.”

Stansted_PRpic_smlStansted Airport in London is the latest in a long line of prestigious installations of Harmer SML lightweight cast iron soil and waste system from Alumasc.

Stansted is the UK’s fourth busiest airport, handling over 18 million passengers every year.

Harmer’s SML is a dry jointed pipework system which was fitted as part of an £80million investment programme including improvements to the public facilities in the terminal building. Other upgrades on the site, owned by the Manchester Airports Group, include a greater choice of shops, bars and restaurants as well as a seventy per cent increase in seating capacity.

Supplied by Alumasc’s merchant partners, BSS Cambridge, the Harmer system was fitted by Stansted company HJ Services.  Director Henry Morgan, comments: “This was the first time we’d used Harmer SML on such a large scale and the installation went very smoothly allowing us to deliver on time. We were very pleased with the product and would be happy to use it again on future installations.”

Wayne Willmott, National Sales Manager for Harmer Drainage, said:

“We were pleased to be involved in such a large project.  This was a significant installation, which saw over 400 metres of piping installed to meet the needs over 90 new toilet and basin units.  Alumasc is continually evolving the Harmer product range to meet industry demands, and the many advantages our SML range will see Stansted Airport and its visitors, benefitting for years to come.”

With a European history spanning over 30 years, Harmer SML offers a cast iron drainage solution which is suitable for a wide range of applications. The system is easy to install with lightweight, strong and durable components requiring minimal maintenance over its lifetime.

With unsurpassed quality and performance standards, Harmer SML carries British Board Agrement Certification, 05/4191. The pipes and fittings meet the European Standard BS EN 877, further assured by the new CE Marking, showing full compliance with EU manufacturing, testing and technical performance requirements.

In another move to reinforce its standing as the UK’s market leading Drainage brand, Harmer Drainage is pleased to announce the expansion of its Sales Team across the UK along with further additions to it’s comprehensive drainage range.

Nick Priest and Marc Turner are joining Alumasc’s team of Harmer Drainage Area Sales Managers following extensive investment in client support services.

Nick Priest brings over 20 years’ experience of working in the drainage industry, with a particular emphasis on the food, brewery, public health and engineering sectors.  His latest role at Alumasc will see him developing and managing new and existing client relationships across the Midlands, South Wales and the South-West.

Marc Turner will be looking after London and the South-East, following 7 years in the construction industry building an in-depth knowledge of specification routes, distribution channels and main/sub-contractor requirements.

The appointments have further strengthened Alumasc’s Harmer Drainage offer during a period of very positive growth for the company in terms of both man-power and products. July sees the launch of a brand new range of Harmer Floor Drains, comprising cast iron, stainless steel and cast aluminium to suit a wide range of applications, making the Harmer offer the most comprehensive on the UK market.

Wayne Willmott is the National Sales Manager for Harmer Drainage – he comments: “These recent changes for the Harmer brand come as a result of our response to market demand and our customers’ need for new and innovative products. The development of our market leading product range is supported by an on-going investment in our people, making us the only brand in the UK to boast such a complete and inclusive package.

“Both Nick and Marc bring with them considerable knowledge of the industry and will no doubt be instrumental in Harmer’s continued success.”

Advances in technology over recent decades have brought some major changes in building practice and construction techniques. None of which have escaped the production of Harmer SML cast iron soil and waste drainage, a traditional material with an advanced future.

For nearly 40 years, the Harmer brand from Alumasc has instilled specifiers and contractors with confidence, using methods and materials that have stood the test of time and will continue to do so for decades to come. The launch of BIM content for its entire Harmer SML range in summer 2014 is another example of Harmer been at the leading edge of the industry.

smlThe range has recently undergone review in order to bring it up to new UK CE Mark requirements and its unrivalled German build quality also carries British Board Agrément Certification 05/4191. The pipes and fittings meet the European Standard BS EN 877, showing full compliance with EU manufacturing, testing and technical performance requirements.

The entire range has a proven track record in high-demand applications such as public buildings, schools, colleges, high-rise office blocks, retail and healthcare facilities.

Most recently Harmer SML is being installed at the new Alder Hey Children’s Health Park in Liverpool. Alumasc worked closely with BSS Drainage to fulfil both the technical and commercial requirements of the contract, which is due for completion in 2016.

This massive installation represents just one of many successful Healthcare applications for SML, with other landmark projects including Royal London & St Barts Hospital’s in London, Derby Hospital, Coventry’s Walsgrave Hospital, Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital in Norwich, Bristol Royal Infirmary and the prestigious London Cancer Clinic in Harley Street.

steelSML can be integrated with Harmer roof outlets and floor drains, which were also specified at Alder Hey & Royal London & St Barts. Harmer Roof outlets are designed for ease of installation and provide highly efficient rainwater handling solutions for all flat roof projects. The Floor Drain range covers all internal waste water situations, designed to ensure maximum efficiency.

ironHaving launched a new Stainless Steel Floor and Channel Drain Range at the beginning of 2014, July will bring further development with the introduction of new Cast Iron Floor Drains. The new cast iron range will offer a robust, high performance alternative which complements Harmer’s existing drainage solutions, making the Harmer Drainage offer the most comprehensive on the market.

Technological advances have played a very large part in Alumasc’s progression of its overall service provision during recent years. Having been
the first manufacturer to develop a PC and iPad app for the calculation of Rainwater and Drainage systems – a feature which has quickly become part of everyday life for large numbers of architects and specifiers nationwide – and now the launch of its first phase of BIM content for its entire Harmer SML range.

Available from summer 2014, the BIM portfolio will be produced in Autodesk Revit MEP (2012) format and will be fully compliant with COBie UK 2012, BS1192 and AEC (UK).

Ben Green, Marketing Manager for Harmer Drainage at Alumasc, comments:

“The introduction of BIM compatible content is one of the most significant changes we’ve seen in the construction industry in recent years. The potential benefits of BIM are countless but we realise that for some, the implementation may present challenges. We hope that by providing our BIM content for Harmer SML at such an early stage of the process, it will give architects and specifiers the time they need to make the transition as painless as possible and meet the requirements of the Government Construction Strategy (GCS) to have collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) on its projects by 2016.”

In an industry first, Alumasc has designed a new Rainwater and Drainage Calculator enabling Architects and Specifiers to build roof drainage systems which are automatically compliant to BS EN 12056:2000 and are designed to protect for the life of the building.

The calculator presents the user with four modules for the calculation of: Foul Drainage, Internal Rainwater Drainage, Flat Roof Drainage and External Rainwater Drainage.

The Flat Roof calculator will design a system to cater for the rainfall intensity of a specific project location. By inputting relevant criteria, such as roof area and design requirements, it will calculate the required outlet type and number required.

Once the Flat Roof drainage requirements have been ascertained, the Internal Drainage calculator builds an internal stack system to take rainwater internally from the flat roof, producing a variety of schematics showing the configuration of pipework as it would appear throughout the building.

For Foul Drainage, the system determines the size of Harmer SML pipework based upon the number of appliances that will be connected to the stack. The user is prompted to select factors appropriate to the type of building then a drainage system is designed in accordance with BSEN 12056-2:2000.

For external rainwater disposal, the Rainwater Gutter calculator designs a system based on a range of criteria input by the user. The system calculates the correct gutter size and type, providing frequency of pipework based on the data entered. This data is then retained for use across the alternative product ranges and profiles.

Architect Dan Boucher used the Rainwater and Drainage Calculator for the first time on a recent Flat Roof project. He comments: “The new software is a very easy and intuitive system. I can see this becoming a regular and significant part of my specification process from now on and I would have no hesitation in recommending this software to other Architects and Specifiers”.

Download the free software here.

An app for ipad is also coming soon.

Alumasc has significantly expanded its Harmer Roof Drainage range, making it the most comprehensive offer on the market from a single manufacturer.

With the addition of new products and the launch of its new Drainage Calculator software, Alumasc’s Harmer brand offers benefits to all professionals involved in the design and specification of rainwater and roof drainage products.

Alumasc recently unveiled the innovative Drainage Calculator software at Ecobuild 2012, where it was heralded a major step forward for the industry. It is quick and easy to use, turning the process of foul drainage system sizing and flat roof and eaves drainage calculation, into an elementary process.

Another significant development is the introduction of a comprehensive range of cast iron rainwater outlets to create competitive choice for designers who have a preference for cast iron drainage products. The new range of outlets provides for inverted and warm roof construction whilst improving fire safety as well as accommodating wheel load capacities to meet the requirements for car park and podium deck drainage applications.

Alumasc’s Harmer brand is already the leading name in flat roof drainage, with an established product range consisting of aluminium and insulated rainwater outlets. A new Mini Balcony Outlet is now included within the aluminium range, featuring a shallow sump and interchangeable gratings in stainless steel or nickel bronze for applications requiring improvement of finish and enhanced aesthetics.

The Harmer Modulock system consists of an all new product offer comprising an adjustable linear channel system that meets the requirements of Part M Level Access compliance manufactured in galvanised or stainless steel. The new Modulock offer also extends the successful range of adjustable deck supports by simplifying levelling and adjustability during and after installation. The introduction of these products has significantly improved the choice and cost efficiency of raised deck drainage solutions available for green roofs, terraces, walkways and ballasted flat roof construction.

The Harmer range is suited to different roof types including structural concrete, metal deck, timber deck, warm roof, cold roof, green roof and inverted roof.  Harmer Roof outlets can be used with all types of membrane including asphalt, built-up felt, single ply and wet-applied systems and are suitable for applications such as  flat and low pitched roofs, car parks decks, factories and workshops, balconies and roof terraces. All products feature premium quality materials chosen for their inherent strength and durability, for ease of installation and long-life service.

Paul Hetherington, MD of Alumasc Rainwater and Drainage, comments: “No other manufacturer offers such an extensive roof drainage range at such competitive prices. The on-going development of our products and services is essential in supporting the industry – in addition to the improved range, Alumasc’s Harmer technical support is second to none and our new calculation software is proving a major benefit to contractors and specifiers.”

Harmer SML, the lightweight cast iron drainage system from Alumasc, has an established reputation for offering a total solution for Soil and Waste disposal, using leading edge cast iron technology and boasting a proven track record of more than 30 years’ use throughout Europe.

Harmer SML is the optimum choice for soil and waste pipework, offering many advantages for contractors and end users both in terms of installation and performance. Cast iron is inherently robust and highly resistant to damage while its outstanding dimensional stability and high tensile strength eliminate the need for expansion joints and reduce the amount of fixing bracketry required. It is also non-combustible, offers excellent noise attenuation, tested to BS EN 14366: 2004 and is 100% recyclable.

The pipework comes with the option of two-part ductile couplings or unique stainless steel ‘Duo’ couplings that enable faster fixing and built-in electrical continuity, whilst the fixing positions on one side of the coupling allows ease of fixing in confined spaces. The unique Duomat Fixing Tool enables contractors to reduce installation time for the SML system by 50%.

The Duomat Fixing Tool is unique to the Harmer SML system and is suitable for use with any power drill. The tool enables both of the coupling bolts to be tightened simultaneously to the optimum torque setting of 7Nm-9Nm. Two independent preset clutches ensure the correct torque setting, irrespective of the pipe tolerances. The simple toggle adjustment allows for perfect Allen bit alignment for all couplings from 50mm to 300mm diameter and once fitted, the stainless steel duo coupling is totally secure.

John Whybrow, of Alumasc’s Approved Installer PSI, regularly installs Harmer SML using the Duomat Tool. He comments: “Having installed drainage systems both with and without the Duomat Tool, I can state quite confidently that Duomat installations take around half the time.

“The efficient simultaneous tightening of the Duo coupling system has resulted in impressive time and labour savings on site for a significant number of our installations.”

Harmer SML pipes are available in standard 3m lengths, with diameters of 50mm-400mm plus a comprehensive range of fittings and accessories. The system is BBA Agrément Certified fully compliant with BS EN 877 and is CE Marked to European Standards.

Backwater Protection from Alumasc

Posted by judy

Jul30

Kessel_Top_whiteWe are all aware that water is a valuable resource and that Rainwater Management Systems are being increasingly specified in many environmentally-friendly domestic and commercial build projects.

But as well as saving water on a daily basis, we also need to be aware of what precautions can be taken for occasions when there is suddenly too much of it.

The lesser talked about phenomenon of Backwater damage is an increasing threat due to global warming. Backwater has always existed, but as the climate changes and sudden rainfall becomes more common, drainage and sewer systems can be overwhelmed, resulting in expensive flood damage.

The Harmer Kessel Backflow range from Alumasc ensures buildings are protected against the costly affects of backwater damage.

Manufactured from robust PVC, the range includes automatic backflow stops which, under normal conditions, allow the free passage of waste water through the system. In instances of heavy rain, flooding or blocked pipes, the valves prevent storm and flood water backing up in the pipes, thus avoiding damage.

Meteorogical experts have concluded that more and more unexpected rainfall is likely in the future, making the installation of Backwater solutions a cost effective method of prevention that would otherwise result in very costly refurbishment.

Aluminium – True Sustainability

Posted by judy

Apr14

The German Association of the Aluminium Industry (GDA) is to launch a UK press campaign promoting the use of Aluminium across all industry sectors.

Fabrication_2

Aluminium fabrication at Alumasc

At Alumasc, we have been aware of the true sustainable qualities of aluminium for many years. Despite the material being one of the most plentiful metals in the world, it is also one of the most recyclable. About 75 percent of all aluminium ever made has been in the metal loop since the year 1888, with as much as 95% of aluminium in the construction sector being recycled stock.

Alumasc offer a wide range of high performance aluminium products. The strength, formability, corrosion resistance and overall versatility of aluminium make it particularly suited for use in rainwater and drainage solutions for all types of building.

Heritage Cast Aluminium from Alumasc

Heritage Cast Aluminium from Alumasc

Our Aluminium Rainwater range comprises Heritage Cast Gutters, Aqualine Extruded Gutters and GX Pressed Gutters, all available with 3 alternative downpipe systems; Flushjoint, Guardian and Heritage. Compatible aluminium Skyline Fascia Soffit, Anti-Climb and Coping systems complement these ranges.

A recent addition to our Aluminium Drainage product portfolio is the new generation Harmer Shower Drain (also available in ABS compound). Manufactured from LM6 aluminium alloy, Harmer Aluminium Shower Drains are precision engineered to set the highest possible performance standards. Additional, tried and tested aluminium drainage solutions also form part of the Harmer Roof and Harmer Floor ranges.

New Aluminium Harmer Shower Drains

Harmer Building Drainage, part of Alumasc Water management Systems (AWMS), has recently supplied its leading SML below ground drainage system to a major London development. The project, sited at The Minories, Aldgate, sees the introduction of the first Canopy by Hilton hotel in the UK which is scheduled to open in 2018. Working with contractors PCW Drainage Ltd and A J Morrisroe, Harmer supplied below ground drainage for the hotel’s new double storey basement box.

The Minories Hilton hotel is a prestigious development, close to London’s historic Roman and medieval city walls and a short walk from the East End. Wayne Wilmot, National Sales Manager for Harmer Drainage comments: “It’s an unusual site. The contractor, A J Morrisroe, constructed a double storey basement box and podium slab to support a 16 storey residential block and a 14 storey hotel extension. It covers a footprint of around 3,500 metres across a narrow site. There were multiple levels of earlier construction to work through, including foundations and piles that date back to the 19th century. And because it’s close to the East End, The Museum of London and 1st Line Defence got involved to establish if there were any WW2 unexploded bombs buried on the site! Definitely not a run-of-the-mill project!

“The construction required drainage with excellent load bearing strength,” continues Wayne, “as well as the assurance of durability and maintenance free, so our Harmer SML drainage was the ideal choice.”

Harmer’s SML cast iron soil and waste pipes provide a lightweight, dry jointed system at the leading edge of cast iron technology. It’s a complete soil and waste below ground pipework system that is strong, durable, easy to install, non-combustible, and allows for direct connection from soil to drain to sewer. It also comes with the assurance of BBA certification, Kitemark accreditation and CE Marking conforming to BS EN 877.

Picture 157Harmer Building Drainage has been awarded BBA Agrément certification on its SML cast iron drainage for below ground applications, adding to its already certified above ground range. The certification covers the installation of foul and surface water pipes, couplings and fittings in domestic, commercial and public buildings.

Harmer’s below ground drainage was assessed for installed strength, water tightness, flow characteristics, resistance to chemicals found in domestic waste water, resistance to elevated temperatures, and durability. The certification gives architects, specifiers and contractors the assurance that Harmer’s materials and manufacturing have undergone rigorous testing and inspection in order to achieve compliance.

Wayne Wilmot, National Sales Manager for Harmer Drainage comments: “Achieving BBA certification confirms our SML below ground range is fully compliant to a leading industry standard. Our SML range is a lightweight, dry jointed pipework drainage system at the leading edge of cast iron technology. It delivers exceptional performance and strength, and is 100% recyclable. Contractors and specifiers who choose our products know they will stand the test of time and function at the highest standard when used in performance-critical projects.”

Harmer’s above and below ground drainage has been specified and installed in a wide range of projects, including the Hilton Hotel near Minories, London; the new Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool; the Royal Holloway University of London; and Redrow Homes in Tavistock Gardens.

Harmer Building Drainage is part of Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS), the first joined up brand in the industry to provide an overall water management solution, from rain to drain. AWMS also includes Alumasc Rainwater, Skyline Fascia & Soffits and Gatic Civil Drainage.

MD Steve Durdant Hollamby with Alumasc's blue rain dropsAlumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) was among the many supplier brands supporting the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants’ (WCoBM) Float at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show. Two members of staff, dressed as bright blue water droplets, took part in the three mile walk. Rainy weather and gloomy skies did not stop crowds of people lining the streets to watch the popular Show. AWMS’ costumes attracted every eye in the crowds.

AWMS is the umbrella brand for four trusted brands in water management and its strapline – from rain to drain – was perfect for the weather. The rain drop costumes were also perfect for an integrated water management solutions story. Managing Director Steve Durdant-Hollamby comments: “Although the weather wasn’t on our side, it was a fantastic day and a privilege to be part of such a high profile Show. WCoBM’s float was captured live on the BBC and our bright blue costumes stood out at a distance!

“The two girls wearing the costumes did really well as they’re not easy to walk in, especially for any length of time. In fact all the building material suppliers’ costumes that took part looked great!”

The Lord Mayor’s Show is one of the best-known annual events in London as well as one of the longest-established, dating back over 800 years. WCoBM’s float supported the new Lord Mayor, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley who is an Honorary Liveryman of the WCoBM. The theme of the float was ‘Builders’ Merchants: Supplying Britain’s Building Needs’, demonstrating the importance of builders’ merchanting to construction and the UK economy. It also highlighted the many career opportunities in construction for young people.

Alder Hey Children's hospital

Harmer Drainage high performance Roof Outlets and SML above ground drainage were recently specified for a new, forward thinking children’s hospital in Liverpool.

The Alder Hey Children’s Health Park is a large £250m project developed to improve the paediatric medical facility and enhance the experience of both patients and staff. The aim is to set the hospital as a new benchmark for the delivery of paediatric care in the UK and around the world. It includes six wards, a large critical care unit, 16 theatres and a host of clinical services, together with shops and cafes.

Covering a floor space of more than 60,000 sq. metres, it’s been designed around colour and orientated to make the most of its heavily landscaped setting. A mix of curved and flat roofs enhances the design and architecture. All rooms look onto the surrounding park, helping to blur the lines between inside and outside. The hospital, designed by BDP, won the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award at the British Construction Industry Awards.

High performing products were key criteria for the design and build of Alder Hey. Through M&E merchant BSS, Harmer supplied its SML cast iron soil and waste pipes chosen for its lightweight, dry jointed system, with the assurance of BBA certification, Kitemark accreditation and CE Marking conforming to BS EN 877. The above ground drainage system is strong, durable, easy to install and non-combustible, which means fire protection collars are not necessary. Excellent noise attenuation tested to BS EN 14366:2004 is another key benefit of Harmer’s unique cast iron pipes, which means the sound of swooshing water cascading down from upstairs fixtures is suppressed.

Harmer also supplied high capacity aluminium flat roof outlets, which are ideal for flat roof drainage applications. The outlets are lightweight, non-corrosive and highly durable. They are also easy to fix and require minimal maintenance. The high flow performance ensures the outlets drain up to 40% more roof area than conventional gravity outlets.

Harmer's new stainless steel range for vinyl floors (LR)

Harmer Building Drainage adds to its high performance stainless steel floor drains with a new vinyl floor option, ideal for industrial and commercial kitchens.

The innovative drains are also suitable for wash down and compliment Harmer’s existing stainless steel range. Specifiers and contractors can now benefit from a versatile solution for vinyl floor applications with the choice of two models – fixed or adjustable height; a vertical or horizontal outlet; with circular gratings. An easy fit clamp ring helps to secure the vinyl sheet.

The vinyl floor drains also lead in flow rate, achieving up to 3.0L/s against the standard 1.4L/s, and comfortably exceeding the BS EN 1253 minimum required capacity for a ground floor 100mm outlet of 1.8L/s at 20mm head of water.

Harmer Drainage Sales Manager Wayne Willmott says: “We’re committed to continual improvement of our range to ensure customers benefit from the best and most comprehensive choice of drainage products for their projects. Our new stainless steel drains for vinyl floors are no exception. They fit perfectly with our channel system and provide excellent performance against corrosion.”

Harmer Drainage is part of Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) – the joined up name in rain to drain water management. It’s one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of building drainage products.

WCoBM Float in 2013 (LR)The Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants (WCoBM) will once again have a float in the Lord Mayor’s Show on Saturday 12th November. The float will be in support of their Honorary Liveryman, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley, who will be installed as the City’s new Lord Mayor the day before.

The Show is one of the best-known annual events in London as well as one of the longest-established, dating back to the 16th century. Over 150 floats take part each year in a two mile procession through the City to celebrate the inauguration of a new Lord Mayor. The whole event is captured live on the BBC.

Crowds of people line the City’s streets to celebrate the occasion and cheer the long fleet of vehicles, marching bands, spectacular floats, carriages and much more. The Show represents charities, community groups, business and Livery companies as well as Her Majesty’s Forces and the City Police.

A good eye-catching float with a clear message can be seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors at the Show and, via press and television, can reach an audience of millions. The WCoBM had a float in 2013. It featured Builders’ Merchanting through the ages, starting with a hand-cart and ending with a flat-bed lorry. It grabbed the attention of BBC broadcasters and featured prominently on TV.

This year the theme is – ‘Builders’ Merchants: Supplying Britain’s Building Needs’ – demonstrating the importance of builders’ merchanting to the UK economy. The float will also highlight the many career opportunities for young people. A single modern vehicle will lead, followed by a JCB Forklift with a mock pallet of bricks, placards with prominent messages, and walkers in striking building materials costumes representing high profile supplier brands. BBC Researchers will be briefed in the hope it will once again catch their eye and the cameras.

WCoBM’s Master Leo Martin comments: “It’s a key objective of the WCoBM to raise the profile of builders’ merchants, and their value to construction and Britain’s economy. Builders’ Merchants are at the heart of supplying building materials for the built environment yet many people are unaware that most of Britain’s building materials for homes, roads, public sector and commercial buildings are supplied through merchants.

“Our industry is an exciting and diverse sector for career development. Builders’ merchanting covers a very wide range of jobs from yard work, to sales, operations, finance and marketing, including opportunities to become a director. The Lord Mayor’s Show is a great opportunity to reach a wide audience with these important messages.”

Master Elect Stephen Turner, who will lead the float with a large number of liverymen, adds: “Floats are expensive but, with help from sponsors, the Company will cover most of its costs. We are very grateful to them – without their support, we could not take part. Sponsors include: ACO, Alumasc Water Management Solutions, Catnic, Crystal Direct, Dickies, Ibstock, IKO PLC, JCB, Knauf Insulation, Liberon, Makita, Naylor Pipes and NMBS. A lot of hard work and creativity has gone into developing imaginative costumes – we’ve had a sneak preview and they look great!”

All merchants and suppliers are invited to come along to support the industry along the route. It will be a great day out. Hope to see you there!
